The album is a visceral response to current events of the past few years. The feeling of being controlled, especially during the COVID pandemic and economic downturn, is still bringing out the human reaction to fight back against systems that are broken but still aim to remain in power. As a band, Athletics attempts to bottle up these emotions and redirect them through music.
The main challenge was to create visuals that would not be incorrectly perceived as condoning or supporting violent events that have occurred in the past number of years while still communicating the pent up frustration so many are experiencing.
Most people are just trying to live their lives, support their families, and mind their own business. However, there looms that point where even the mild mannered are pushed too far. I chose visuals of a dog because, for the most part, it takes a lot of abuse for a dog to react aggressively.
The title’s type treatment and the graphics’ misregistered coloring reinforce the uneasy feeling that something’s not lining up and a sense of gritty tension.
