When DJs Lumin and Kems got the opportunity to do an all vinyl internet radio show, they got in touch with me to design a logo and digital promo materials. The music was going to be an eclectic mix of funk, jazz, hip hop, soul, disco, and rare records. They chose Above the Clouds as the show's title.
I wanted to capture the vibe of small record label logos from back in the day, primarily the DIY handmade feel. I looked at some of the logos on the records in my own collection, checked out some images online, and started sketching. I decided to try something new in my process: I would start by sketching digitally instead of with pencil and paper.
After a few days spent with my little Wacom tablet in Photoshop and Manga Studio, I found that I could get my ideas out faster and make adjustments more easily by using my trusty sketchbook and mechanical pencil. I guess I'm old school that way.
Once I found the sketch that best fit the direction, I got Lumin's approval and started the vectoring process. The guys were pleased with the final version, so I went ahead with a digital flyer design to promote the show. We chose a square format which fits for getting the word out on Twitter and Instagram.
